The Effect of Colour Coding in Project Success and Delivery

THE EFFECT OF COLOUR CODING IN PROJECT SUCCESS AND DELIVERY

CHAPTER ONE

1.0 Introduction

1.1 Background Of The Study

A colour code or colour coding is a system for displaying information by using different colours. In ideal environments, most common construction materials are very durable and can last indefinitely. However, design or construction deficiencies or lack of proper maintenance can result in less-than-ideal conditions under which construction materials will degrade. Degradation can take many forms, including chemical reactions, consumption by living organisms, and erosion or mechanical wear. Traditional building materials steel, concrete, and wood — usually deteriorate and fail via well-known mechanisms. Even innovative materials that appear on construction sites can degrade, either by these well-understood mechanisms or through exotic, sometimes surprising, reactions and processes.

Civil engineers are often responsible for specifying, designing and manufacturing the materials with which they build their structures. Studies in construction materials are intended to make structural, transportation and foundation engineers aware of the fundamental properties of the materials they use.

Project management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project activities to meet the project requirements. Also, a project is a temporary in that it has a defined beginning and end in time, and therefore defined scope and resources. And a project is unique in that it is not a routine operation, but a specific set of operations designed to accomplish a singular goal. So a project team often includes people who don’t usually work together — sometimes from different organizations and across multiple geographies.

1.2 Statement Of The Problem

Attempts has been made towards operating on integrated approach the problem of how to identified the materials using different colours in construction company and therefore time given to complete a given task of production delivery of goods always exceeds the expected given time.

The use of quantitative techniques in assigning jobs in some organization may cause wastages of materials as the individual involved may not have the skill and technical know-how to carry out the task effectively and efficiently.

Lack of training and retraining of members of staff on how to use the materials and keep the proper records of inventories can also bring losses and production of inferior or scraps that may not be useful to the stud intends to investigate on the strength and weakness of workers, maintain good record keeping and to know the problem of material management in construction companies.

1.3 Aim and Objectives Of The Study

The aim of the study is to investigate the Effect of Colour Coding in Project Success and Delivery. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows:

  1. To assess the effect of colour coding in project success in construction site.
  2. To determine whether colour could be used to differentiate different materials in the site.
  3. To find out different types of rods, studs and gasket used in project site.

1.4 Research Questions

The study came up with research questions so as to be able to ascertain the above stated objectives. The specific research questions for the study are stated below as follows:

  • What are the effects of colour coding in project success in construction site?
  • Does colour could be used to differentiate different materials in the site?
  • What are the different types of rods, studs and gasket used in project site?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.

Hypothesis One

  • H0: There is no significant difference between the effects of colour coding in project success/delivery in construction site.
  • H1: There is a significant difference between the effects of colour coding in project success/delivery in construction site.

Hypothesis Two

  • H0: There is no significant difference between the types of rods, studs, and gasket used in project in project site.
  • H1: There is a significant difference between the types of rods, studs, and gasket used in project in project site.

1.6 Significance Of The Study

The significance of the study is to benefit both the researchers and readers, for it makes for a very interesting and educational reading, since the study will attempt to make everything in detail which will attract readers and future readers.

It would also help the project managers on how to use various colour to differentiate materials in construction site.

Finally, it would also serve as a source of reference to students of engineering who may wish to further this research on the topic closely related to the one of this project and it would help government and stakeholders who may wish to invest in the company.

1.7 Scope Of The Study

The study concerns about the effect of colour coding of materials in project success and delivery in Construction Company using Julius Berger Construction Company Plc.

1.8 Limitation Of The Study

One of the major problems encountered in the course of this study was difficulty in obtaining data from the management body of the organization due to fear of disclosing their management strategies to competitors. Time constraints were also a problem in the course of this research work.
