PNEUMATIC RECIPROCATING POWER HACKSAW MACHINE PROJECT

CHAPTER ONE

1.1 Introduction

The hacksaw is the metal cutting machine tool designed to cut metal by applying pneumatic pressure. Hacksaws are used to cut thin and soft metals the operation of the unit is simplified to a few simple operations involving a cylinder block and piston arrangement. There are numerous systems in hacksaw machine. A hacksaw is a handheld device used to slice through materials like plastic tubing and metal funnels. Its cutting system is given by removable edges which include sharp teeth along their external edge. As a rule, a hacksaw comprises of a metal casing that takes after a descending confronting. A handle of plastic, wood, or metal is regularly joined to one end of the casing. The edge's closures highlight customizable pegs that can be fixed to anchor a sharp edge set up, and extricated to expel it. Hacksaw sharp edges are long, thin portions of solidified steel that element a line of teeth along their front line. Each finish of the edge is punched with a little gap that fits onto the saw edge's pegs. Most sharp edges extend long from ten to 12inches (25.4 to 30.48 cm), albeit six-inch (15.24 cm) edges can be acquired to fit littler hacksaw models.

As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are Significance of the study, Scope of work, Limitations of the Study and Definition of technical terms.

1.2 Background of Study

The saw was one of the first great innovations of the Metal Age. It was developed with smelted copper, from which a blade could be cast. Many of the early copper saws have the general appearance of large meat-carving knives. Egyptian illustrations from about 1500 BC onward show the saw being used to rip boards, the timber being lashed to a vertical post set into the ground. Though there is no evidence of the type of saw used, Egyptians were able to saw the hard stone. The blade was probably toothless and rode on an abrasive material such as moistened quartz sand. The 7 1/2-foot granite coffer still in the Great Pyramid carries saw marks. During the Bronze Age, saws became much more widespread in woodworking. It was at this time that the modern form of the saw began to come into play. Some of the saws used resembled hacksaw blades of today. Iron saws started to be produced in the mid- 7th century BC.

While saws for cutting metal had been being used for a long time, noteworthy upgrades in life span and effectiveness were made in the 1880s by Max Flower-Nash. Clemson, an author of Clemson Bros., Inc of Middletown, New York, United States,. Clemson directed tests which included changing the measurements, states of teeth, styles of set, and variable warmth medications of cutting edges. Clemson guaranteed tremendous changes to the cutting capacity of edges and constructed a noteworthy mechanical activity fabricating hacksaw sharp edges sold under the exchange name Star Hack Saw. In 1898, Clemson was conceded US Patent 601947, which points of interest different changes in the hacksaw.

Therefore, in Nigeria where the research was carried out, the activities that was conducted is to fabricate a Pneumatic Reciprocating Power Hacksaw Machine Project.

1.3 Statement of Problems

Investigation revealed that traditional single-frame hacksaws are unreliable, requiring advances in technology and design. Hacksaws can cut metal bars made of many different materials in a short time, but they have one major drawback: they can only cut two bars at a time. Metal rods need to be cut at a rapid rate for industries to achieve mass production.

1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study

The aim of the study is to design and fabricate a Pneumatic Reciprocating Power Hacksaw Machine Project. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows:

  1. To design an automatic pneumatic reciprocating power hacksaw cutting machine; and
  2. To automate the conventional power hacksaw machine in order to achieve high productivity of work-pieces than the power hacksaw machine using pneumatic power.

1.5 Significance of Study

This study will be of immense benefit to researchers who intend to know more on this study and can also be used by non-researchers to build more on their research work. This study contributes to knowledge and could serve as a guide for other study.

1.6 Scope of Study

The scope of the research is focused on the Design and Fabrication of Pneumatic Reciprocating Power Hacksaw Machine Project.

1.7 Limitations of the Study

During the course of this study, many things militated against its completion, some of which are:

  1. Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
  2. Research material: availability of research material is a major setback to the scope of the study.
  3. Frequent power failure: This made the researcher append more money on fuel to ensure sustainable power.
  4. Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet).

1.8 Definition of Terms

Hacksaw: Hacksaw is a machine used for metal cutting ranging from transportable model to giant size machine.

Sewing Machine: A sewing machine is a machine tool designed to cut material to a desired length or contour.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can the material for “Strategic Planning and Control: Tool for the Growth and Survival of Small and Medium Scale Enterprises” be used as a guide for Business Administration and Management (BAM) Project?

Yes it can be used — This research work is on strategic planning and control: tool for the growth and survival of small and medium scale enterprise (SMES). A case study of star paper mil, Aba, Abia state. The emphasis is on SMEs, because, growth in SMES is a sin quo non for vibrant economic growth of country. More importantly, most multinational business in the world today started as a small scale business. Thus, strategic planning ensures that the goals and objectives of SMES in enhancing the growth of the Nigerian economy is achieved. This study x-rays the need for strategic planning and control in actualizing the intended objectives of SMES in the country. To ensure that this study covered its intended area, the work was divided into …

Can this topic “Multi-Level Intrusion Detection and Log Management System in Cloud Computing” be used for Computer Science Education Project?

Yes it can be utilized for research — Cloud Computing is a new type of service which provides large scale computing resource to each customer. Cloud Computing systems can be easily threatened by various cyber-attacks, because most of Cloud Computing systems provide services to so many people who are not proven to be trustworthy. Therefore, a Cloud Computing system needs to contain some Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) for protecting each Virtual Machine (VM) against threats. In this case, there exists a trade-off between the security level of the IDS and the system performance. If the IDS provide stronger security service usingmore rules or patterns, then it needs much more computing resources in proportion to the strength of security. So the amount of resources allocating for customersdecreases. Another problem in …

Can this topic “The Impact of Government Expenditure on Economic Growth” be used for Economics Project?

Yes it can be utilized for research — This research work is on the impact of government expenditure on economic development in Nigeria. The main objective of this study is to empirically examine the impact of government expenditure on economic development in Nigeria. The data for this research work (Gross Domestic Product, government recurrent expenditure and government capital expenditure) was obtained from the CBN Statistical Bulletin (2016) and analysed using ordinary least squares (OLS) technique. Gross domestic product was regressed against government recurrent expenditure and government capital expenditure. Certain econometrics tests were conducted such as Unit Root test, Cointegration test, and Vector Error Correction Model. The result showed that government expenditure had negative effect on economic growth of Nigeria for the period under review. The unit root test indicates …
