INFORMATION MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR NOLLYWOOD MOVIES, TELEVISION SHOWS AND MUSIC

ABSTRACT

Information Management System (IMS) is a software designed to facilitate the storage, organization and retrieval of information. The aim of the study is to design and implement a web-based Information Management System for Nollywood Movies, television shows, and music. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows to develop an application software that will provide access to users to observe different reviews on a movie or song before downloading and evaluate the needs that could be utilized to build an information management system. The motivation that led to the implementation of the proposed system is that the existing system is manually operated and management of records of Nollywood Movies, Television Shows and Music is time consuming. The recording of Actors and Actress recruited and their activities are done manually in a book, which looks/appears rough. Thus, the books or files are exposed to physical damage by ants and pests, accumulation of dust particles; this makes the contents to be lost, misplaced or even altered. The methodology adopted in this study is the structured system analysis and design methodology (SSADM) which is a technical approach for analyzing and designing an application or system by applying object throughout the software development process. The programming language used is HTML, CSS, JAVASCRIPT, PHP, SQL and JQUERY. The reason why web programming languages was used is because, it is platform independent and it is a web based application. The relevance of the study will help to instruct producers to be conscious of the negative influences on younger generation offer solutions to better ways of presentation of the cultural contents of Nigerian movies. The expected result is an Information Management System that will Display the rated films that interest Nollywood movie audience and provide a platform for users to express their thoughts about a viewed movie or song.

CHAPTER ONE

1.1 Introduction

Information Management System (IMS) is a general term for software designed to facilitate the storage, organization and retrieval of information. Information systems have become the backbone of most organizations. Banks could not process payments, governments could not collect taxes, hospitals could not treat patients, and supermarkets could not stock their shelves without the support of information systems. In almost every sector− education, finance, government, health care, manufacturing, and businesses large and small information systems play a prominent role. Every day work, communication, information gathering, and decision making all rely on information technology (IT). Electronic document and records management system (EDRMS) is a type of content management system and refers to the combined technologies of document management and records management systems as an integrated system.

As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are Significance of the study, Scope of work, Limitations of the Study and Definition of technical terms.

1.2 Background of Study

In 1947 the Nigerian government established their own, federal film unit. The film unit produced mainly newsreels and documentary firms in the fifties the film industry in Nigeria was dominated totally by foreigners and foreign films. During this era, film so we are done in cinema halls, village squares, school and church premises. This public show of film, make it possible to show only films that are of high technical quality. With the advent of video compact disc (VCD) or the digital video (DVD), the old culture of going to the cinema centers and public arenas for film show dropped. Children and adults now sit indoors glued to their video. Then the era of home movies was born. Then the era of home movies was born. Movies in English, pidgin English, Igbo Hausa and Yoruba flooded the market on daily basis.

The information management system for Nollywood movies, television shows and music is a web based system that will be designed to give the users a platform to rate and review movies and music. This ratings and reviews will go a long way because someone who wants to watch a particular movie or wants to download a song can easily go to the site and check for the ratings and reviews to see if it will be worth his/her time.

The Nigerian audiences' first experience in film screening was in 1903 at the Glover Memorial Hall Onuzulike (2016). Even though film was introduced by a European merchant, it took the combined efforts of the colonial administration and the church to sustain the industry (Iyorza, 2016). The content of such films can be easily discerned. The British colonialist used it for their civilizing‖ mission as well as to indicate the blessedness of being colonized. The church, as their involvement in education and the media industry has shown, used films for spreading the gospel. However, the Nigerian film has grown in leaps and bounds and considered the third largest producers of film, howbeit, video films but it was not always so (Adenugba, 2008).

Adenugba (2008) further notes that cost of production greatly hampered film production. Film makers unable to cope with cost of shooting on celluloid first turned to reversal film stock and later on, video tapes. So unlike the American and Indian film industry, the Nigerian film industry popularly called Nollywood uses the video cassette format and recently the Video Compact Disc (VCD). As a consequence, the films are not shown in Cinema houses since they are shot straight into video tapes, replicated and sold for home viewing hence the term home videos. And it is this ingenuity that has changed the face of the Nigerian film industry.

The challenges encountered that led to the execution of the research work is that, the paper-based Information management system are rapidly becoming outdated. They are easily lost, are subject to wear and tear, are costly to handle, cannot be transferred electronically, may be difficult to interpret, and are inefficient.

1.3 Statement of Problem

Investigation revealed that the existing system is manually operated and management of records of Nollywood Movies, Television Shows and Music is time. The recording of Actors and Actress recruited and their activities are done manually in a book, which looks/appears rough. Thus, the books or files are exposed to physical damage by ants and pests, accumulation of dust particles; this makes the contents to be lost, misplaced or even altered.

1.4 Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of the study is to design and implement a web-based information management system for Nollywood movies, television shows, and music. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows to develop an application software that will:

  1. Provide access to users to observe different reviews on a movie or song before downloading
  2. Give users the platform to express their thoughts about a viewed movie or song.
  3. Assess related research similar to the proposed system.
  4. Display the rated films that interest Nollywood movie audience
  5. Evaluate the needs that could be utilized to build an information management system.

1.5 Significance of Study

The relevance of the study will help to instruct producers to be conscious of the negative influences on younger generation offer solutions to better ways of presentation of the cultural contents of Nigerian movies.

This study will also be of immense benefit to other researchers who intend to know more on this study and can also be used by non-researchers to build more on their research work. This study contributes to knowledge and could serve as a guide for other study.

1.6 Scope of Study

The scope of the research is focused on the Design and Implementation of an Information Management System for Nollywood Movies, Television Shows and Music.

1.7 Limitations of the Study

During the course of this study, many things militated against its completion, some of which are:

  1. Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
  2. Research material: availability of research material is a major setback to the scope of the study.
  3. Frequent power failure: This made the researcher append more money on fuel to ensure sustainable power.
  4. Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet).

1.8 Definition of Terms

Information System: A set of interrelated components that collect (or retrieve), process, store and distribute information to support decision making and control in an organization.
