DYNAMIC CACHE MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUE
CHAPTER ONE
1.1 Introduction
In recent years power dissipation has become a major de sign concern for the microprocessor industry. The shrinking device size and the large number of devices packed in a chip die coupled with the large operating frequencies have led to unacceptably high levels of power dissipation. Modern microprocessors are large power consumers. The very high utilization of the instruction memory hierarchy entails high energy demands on the on chip I Cache subsystem.
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are Justification of the study, Scope of work, and Limitations of the Study.
1.2 Statement of Problems
The problem appears to be more acute in portable systems which operate under the energy constraints of a battery. These systems need a small battery for portability which should provide enough energy to keep the system running for as long as possible Hence the energy dissipation of the portable system should be low so that it does not drain the battery quickly On the other hand desktop systems operate in an increasingly hot environment. The layout compaction and the high operating frequencies entail high power densities and thus high thermal stresses on the chip If this trend is not controlled by low power techniques the chip will have reliability problems such as electro-migration which is due to the high current densities on the metal interconnects Such low power techniques also help in keeping the cost of packaging low thus reducing the cost of the product.
1.3 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of the study is to analyze the cache management technique. In achieving this aim, the following objectives were set out as follows;
- To determine the dynamic cache management technique
- To investigate the process involved in dynamicc cache management
1.4 Scope of Study
The study focuses on dynamic cache management technique in a computer system.
1.5 Justification of Study
The study will be relevant to computer system user as well as system analyst and programmers. The dynamic cache engine is the default cache provider for the dynamic cache APIs and framework. However, starting with Version 6.1.0.27, dynamic cache allows WebSphere eXtreme Scale, which is the strategic direction for caching for the WebSphere products, to act as its core caching engine (IBM, 2021).
Cache is a type of memory that is used to increase the speed of data access. Normally, the data required for any process resides in the main memory. Configuring the dynamic cache to use WebSphere eXtreme Scale lets you leverage transactional support, improved scalability, high availability, and other WebSphere eXtreme Scale features without changing your existing dynamic cache caching code.
1.6 Limitations of the Study
During the course of this study, many things militated against its completion, some of which are:
- Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
- Establishment Policies: Establishment policies posed a serious limitation as most staffs are not ready to release information needed for this project work. There were lots of information needed from the staffs of this institution to enhance the study which took them time to release or they did not release at all for security purposes, hence the scope was reduced.
- Research material: availability of research material is a major setback to the scope of the study.
- Frequent power failure: This made the researcher append more money on fuel to ensure sustainable power.
