CONSTRUCTION OF AN AUTOMATIC SPEED CONTROL FOR A DIRECT CURRENT MOTOR USING GLOBAL SYSTEM MOBILE (GSM)

ABSTRACT

The automatic speed control for a Direct Current (DC) motor using Global System Mobile (GSM) modem is a device used for controlling the speed of a DC motor. It is powered electrically and operates electronically to vary the speed of a DC motor.

This project makes use of a Dial Tone Multi Frequency (DTMF) decoder after being powered to pick the key pad tones from the GSM phone, encode the tones in BCD codes to the pre programmed micro controller which decodes the BCD codes and executes the speed control of the DC motor.

The speed of the motor depends on the number (button) pressed on the key pad of the GSM phone. When button one (1) is pressed, the speed of the DC motor starts increasing. When button two (3) is pressed, the DC motor maintains a constant speed. When button two (2) is pressed, the speed of the DC motor starts decelerating. When button three is pressed, the DC motor attains a constant speed again. When button four (4) is pressed, the DC motor stops operating.

The entire work is well explained with simple and clear English language. Pictures, diagrams and formulas are included to enhance the appreciation and understanding of students, who will find this work most useful, both in classrooms and during their Industrial Training

CHAPTER ONE

1.0 Introduction

The automatic speed control of a Direct Current (DC) motor using Global System Mobile (GSM) modem is a device that controls the speed of a DC motor when data is transmitted from the GSM modem (phone). The speed control depends on the number keyed in from the phone. The GSM modem (phone) is connected to the hardware/circuit which receives the incoming data or information from the next other GSM modem (phone). The circuit decodes the incoming data from the other GSM modem (phone) and then varies/controls the speed of the DC motor accordingly.

The controlled DC motor is designed to run on DC electric power. The rotor consists of one coil of wire wound around a core on a shaft. An electrical power source is connected to the rotor coil through the commutator and its brushes, causing current to flow in to producing electromagnetism.

The commutator causes the current in the coil to be switched as the rotor turns, keeping the magnetic poles of the rotor from ever fully aligning with the magnetic poles of the stator field, so that the rotor never stops (like a compass needle does) but rather keeps rotating indefinitely (as long as power is applied and is sufficient for the motor to overcome the shaft torque load and internal losses due to friction, etc.)

The speed of the motor remains constant (as long as the motor is not under load or performing mechanical work except that required to turn the armature) until another key/number is keyed on the GSM modem(phone).when this is done, the motor receives electric power from the source supplying it and thus increases in speed.

The speed at which the DC motor operates depends on the strength of the magnetic field acting on the armature, as well as the armature current. The stronger the field, the slower is the rate of rotation needed to generate a back voltage large enough to counteract the applied voltage. For this reason, the speed of the DC motor is controlled by using the GSM modem (phone) to vary the field current.

The circuit consists of a microcontroller, DTMF decoder (Dialing Tone Modulation Frequency) and some biasing components.

Is the topic “The Effect of Information Technology on the Operation of Banking System in Nigeria” recommended for Banking and Finance (BF) Project?

Yes it is highly recommended — As Information Technology is the modern trend in banking today, it is imperative for banks to access its impacts operational performance so as to justify if the huge capital invested on it is justifiable or not, analyze their problem and proffer solutions. The objective of this study is to examine how the adoption of information technology affects the operations of commercial banks in terms of effectiveness, efficiency, competitiveness, customer base, and globalization of the bank. The main research instruments used are questionnaire and personal interview for staffs and customers of the bank. The simple frequency percentage was adopted as the statistical measure and hypothesis testing was analyzed using Chi − square. In conclusion, the study revealed that information Technology has tremendously …

Can the material for “Privatization and Commercialization of Government Parastatals in Nigeria” be used as a guide for Public Administration (PA) Project?

Yes it can be used — This premise of this research is based on Privatization and Commercialization of Government Parastatals in Nigeria with reference to Power Holding Company, Nigeria (PHCN) The research adopted a survey research design. A well structured questionnaire was designed and administered to respondents. A sample size of one hundred (100) was drawn from the population of study. The sampling was made based on a simple random sampling technique. The data gathered were presented in tables and analysed with simple percentages. The hypothesis formulated was analysed with the use of Chi-Square technique. It was concluded that − That, privation and commercialization would affect the performance of the power sector; that privatization and commercialization would improve economic performance of parastatals; Privatization and commercialization would solve management …

Can the material for “Fungal Colonization on Human Body Surfaces” be used as a guide for Microbiology Project?
