APPLICATION OF NATURALLY OCCURING PLANT EXTRACT TO ALLEVIATE HEAT STRESS IN MONOGASTRIC ANIMALS

ABSTRACT

The study examines the Application of Naturally Occurring Plant Extract to Alleviate Heat Stress in Monogastric Animals. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out to elaborate on the use of plant extract as alternative ingredient in monogastric animals’ feed, identify different structures and types of plant extract and alleviate the heat stress in Monogastric Animals with the aid of natural plant extract. Heat stress responses are now regarded as an expensive problem in the animal husbandry of many species around the world. In the dairy industry, dairy cows are highly susceptible to heat stress. The motivation of embarking on this research is that the inclusion of the antibiotics could leave residue in the meat and consequently cause resistance to some bacteria in humans. These multifaceted challenges compelled the concerned researchers to look for alternative ingredients which can fill the gap of the Application of Naturally Occurring Plant Extract to Alleviate Heat Stress in Monogastric Animals research work. Data used in this work is derived primary from secondary sources. The methodology therefore, is basically documentary in nature. This involves learning new facts and principles through the study of documents and records. The documents and records include journals, textbooks, newspapers, magazines, official publications etc. By putting together logically evidence derived from documents and records. Conclusion which either established facts hitherto unknown or sound generalization can be obtained. This study will be of immense benefit to researchers who intend to know more on this study and can also be used by non-researchers to build more on their research work. This study contributes to knowledge and could serve as a guide for other study.

CHAPTER ONE

1.1 Introduction

Monogastric animal production, in particular the poultry production sector, is growing continuously, driven mostly by the demand for meat and eggs. However, this rapidly growing industry and the increasing demand for poultry feeds have led to a considerable increase in feedstuff prices. The gap between demand and supply of balanced feed is expected to increase, and consequently increase the cost of production. On the other hand, the conventional feed ingredients such as maize, wheat and rice can no longer meet the poultry industry’s demand for feed. In addition, in-feed antibiotics have been used over a period of time as growth promoters, which positively aids in feed conversion rates and consequently reduces the cost.

As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are Significance of the study, Scope of work, Research hypothesis and questions, Limitations of the Study and Definition of technical terms.
