
THE MEDICINAL COMPONENT OF CUCUMBER AND ANTI-MICROBIAL OF CUCUMBER
ABSTRACT
Cucumber is known as gourd” it is in the family of melon. It is a woody climber that grows in West Africa especially in china, Ghana and Nigeria. The plant is cultivated from earliest time in Nigeria for its edible nuts. Photochemical screening of n-hexane, ethylocetate, ethanol and water extracts of the seed obtained by the cold maccration method revealed the presence of alkaloids, tannins. Saponins glycosides and flavonoids. The extracts inhibited the growth of staphylococcus, epidermidis, streptococcus viridians and coliform bacillus.
CHAPTER ONE
1.0 Introduction
Cucumber known as “gourd” among the Igbo. Belongs to the family of melon and gourd, it is perennial woody climber commonly found in low bush especially in North of Nigeria, Ghana, and China.
The cucumber are long and cucumber cylindrical in shape and range in length from 3 inches to 2 feet. The seeds are sub-globdse about 1 inch diameter and with a hard shell. The seeds and edible even when raw they have a bitter taste and a tonic effect like cola. They are often eaten alone when cooked or with groundnut.
The plant is know among some Igbo communication for its medical efficacy. For example. The decotion of leaves and seeds when taken as beverage relives abdominal pains. The ground roots when diluted with water provides a soothing beverage for stress and reduce our under-eye dark circles.
In this study the phytochemical screening of extracts of the seed of cucumber is carried out with a crew to identifying the presence of the various chemical components. The antibacterial activity of the extracts is also investigated to find out the potency of these towards inhibiting bacterial growth.
The botanical name of cucumber is cucumis sativus

1.2 Types of Cucumber
Dosakai:
— a cucumber that is yellow in colour has a round shape and is available in added in chutriey, samber or soup, Daal and also in making. Dosa Aavakaaya (a type of indan pickle).
English Cucumbers:
— these have very little in the way of seeds and can grow to around 2 (two) feet in length.
Mediterranean Cucumber:
— they skins are smooth with nearly seedless flesh, they have a mild taste.
Jepanse Cucumbers Or Kydri:
— a dark green cucumber with a very bumply skin. Mainly used for slicing salads and pickling.
Cucumber can claim to be a water body as it has 90% water. It is known to be a cooling agent due to the water in it.
(Cucumber Sativus) Extract In Vegetable Glycerin:
— reduces inflammation of dry and mature skin and keeps it soft and moist, contains binding proportion that control grease, keeping the skin fresh leaves the skin clean, soft, and fresh firming and tightening particularly around the eyes.
Cucumis Sativus:
— it has been known for its cooling and refreshing effects. Relatively high in mineral content, cucumber is a valuable source of potassium, sodium, magnesium, salphur, silicon, chlorine and florine.
An Anti-Inflammatory:
— it has an extremely soothing effect on the skin.
S(N) Cucumber, (Cuke):
— cylindrical green fruit with him green rind and white flesh eaten as a vegetable, related to melons.

1.3 Wax Coating
Cucumbers are a fragile fruit and most farmer wax the skin at the fruit from insects, or prevent damage while shipping. Most waxes contain compound such as easily alcohol, soaps mile allergy.
Excessive consumption of cucumber skin leads to the dangers of such harmful compounds entering the body.
1.4 Cucumber For Eyes
It is believed that cucumber helps in reducing swelling around the eyes or the big (dark circle under your eyes.)
This is world-wide treatment which is being used to its maximum extent.
Cucumbers are the most wonderful and natured eye pads you can find for yourself.
The pettiness and the tiredness in your eyes may just leave you; if you do this in a relaxed fashion these natural eye pads do wonders after a long days work.
1.5 Cucumber For Skin

It has becomes part of daily beauty product into face packs, facials, juice and many other things which can affect, it can be termed as a magic wand for all your skin problems. The cleaning and cleansing properly helps your skin tremendous making it soft and supple.
