THE EFFECT OF THE INTERNET ON THE READING HABIT OF STUDENTS
ABSTRACT
This study was on the Effect of Internet on the Reading Habit of Federal Polytechnic Student Owerri. A sample size of 120 respondents was randomly selected from all the Department of Federal Polytechnic Nekede Owerri (Mass Communication, Public Administration and others) the outcome of the research show that truly, the internet is affecting the reading habit of student positively and negatively and negatively and for this to be avoid, the Polytechnic should often conduct seminars/orientation programmes to educate students on the negative effect of the internet.

1.0 Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Reading is one of oldest habits of human civilization. It has been the passion of the greatest personalities of all times. One of the first documentary sources for reading was manuscript, however, accessible only to the elite class of society. Later, the arrival of the Gutenberg printing press ended such discrimination by making the printed word available to all. The emergence of the internet has created an extraordinary change in the reading culture of students. This research will elaborate on the effect of the internet on the reading habit of federal Polytechnic Nekede Student.
The internets have created a societal revolution with a great reach for a better and more convenient life. This explains the fact that the internet has added meaning to it users, and the society at large. It has transformed lives, individually. it also gives hope to the students with learning disabilities and has facilitated learning in so many ways for example: Research works, sales, entertainment, communications purchases, education and many more.
With the production of sophisticated equipment in this 21st century and the introduction of the internet have made the reading habits of students especially Federal Polytechnic Nekede Student to pushed reading to the extreme. Internet as one of the aspects of changes of today's modern electronic mass media contents. Indeed these cults for great attention on the reading habits of youths and students of Federal Polytechnic Nekede.
What then is reading habits? Good readers adopt good reading techniques like: Concentration, Motivation, Visual reading, having good chunk of words of words at a time and flexibility in his reading techniques for there to be a success in reading, the reader should be able to increase his eye span. That means his ability to recognize in large chunk of words in just a fixation.
To achieve success in this aforementioned point, one needs to read constantly. (Rudiments of Functional English Grammar by Basilia Igbokwe PhD), 2006 first published; page 158 Chp. 8). Reading to learn is an essential tool for life-long learning. Promoting a reading culture among students of FPN is therefore one of the key tasks in the curriculum reform with aim to strengthening students learning capabilities.
To understand the current situation of the reading culture of students , we conducted a survey in February 2011 via questionnaire method of data collection the objective is to investigate the effect of new technologies development on the reading habits of student relating to books, newspapers their interest in reading as well as reading condition at home and school were also curved, the new technologies internet not only influence students learning and studying in the classrooms, but also affect there reading behaviours at home the results of the study revealed that students read online information more often than offline information mean while he time student spent in certain repeat, especially in reading emails and online information surpass reading those paper – based materials.
The first large-scale automatic digital computer in the Harvard University around 1940. This computer was 8ft high, 50ft long, 2ft wide and weighed stones HUGE programmed using Punch Cards. In 1940 The ENIAC was the first high-speed, digital computer capable of being reprogrammed to solve a full range of computing problems. The global explosion of the internet use in higher institution by students. The internets have affected the academic level positively and otherwise so many scholars have augured. This research work will reveal whether the students reading habit is been affected by the internet in a negative or in a positive way, also to know whether the negative effects are higher than the positive.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Change is the only thing that is constant in this world. Everything is subject to change, whether it's small or huge. And these changes have its complementary effects, either good or bad. Technology especially, information and communication technologies are one area that has caused a global charge in the habits of students at every cadre.
A prefix-logia: this is a scientific progression and modification of tools, machines, techniques, systems and methods of organization has helped in solving of students reading habit as well as have been the reason for the decline in students visits to the libraries as well as their attitude to reading printed matter.
Technological advancements as well as its disadvantages in students reading habit with its distractions. Student become more dependent to electronics around them because they believe in the power of the internet and relies on them. As a result of this, students do not do things on there own without the help of the internet.
Students spend less time studying rather they invest more time in using the internet because they believe that doing researches and assignment can be easily done with the help of the internet. The study seeks to find the effects of the internet on students, particularly in their studying habits.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
There is no research in the universe without objectives it tends to achieve. The major objectives which triggered off the study are to find:
- To determine the extent of internet use by students of Federal Polytechnic Nekede.
- To determine if the internet affects students reading habit.
- To find out the negative affects of the internet on student reading habit.
- To give out other factors that is affecting students reading habit.
1.4 Research Questions
- To what extent are students using the internet?
- Is the internet affecting the reading habit of Federal Polytechnic Nekede student?
- What are the negative implications of using the internet by students?
- What other factors affect students reading habit?
1.5 Significance of the Study
According to Nwodu (2006), a significance of the study “establishes the rationale for the study. The statement here clearly states the importance of the study and who should or likely to benefit from the outcome of the study”.
Therefore, the study will be significant as it will expose. For students, the negative effect of the internet on their reading and how they can balance the use of the internet with other tradition methods.
For parents, to control their children in making such decision in excessively using their internet.
To teachers, they study will help teachers to understand the students better, by this study the will come up on how to manage such student.
1.6 Scope of the Study
This work on the effects of the internet in Federal Polytechnic Nekede, other areas that affect students reading habit will be looked at.
1.7 Limitations to the Study
The researcher encountered some limitations in the course of carrying out this research work. The unavailability of literary works, unwillingness of the respondents to complete copies of the questionnaire administered and the small time to gather and analysis and present the data were sure constraint of the study.
1.8 Definition of Terms
The following terms are used in the context of the study thereby defined in order to foster understanding of the study:
Reading:
Reading is a developmental process that requires being mastered. It needs self-disciplines being flexible and concentration. Reading is the process of looking at, having the ability to comprehend a printed or written work. Success in school is dependent on one's reading ability that is why reading represents the major part of a students studying time. Students are therefore expected to make good effort to improve their reading capacity or power.
Habits:
An action done on a regular basis.
Internet:
International networks global communication network.
Students:
A person who studies at school College or University [Tertiary Institution].
Federal Polytechnic Nekede:
A polytechnic institution, which is situated at Owerri the capital city of Imo State for education purposes. Nekede; A sub-urban town in Owerri where the Federal Polytechnic is situated, it has a lot of amenities, which is seen in every urban city such as electricity, tertiary. Institutions, good road network etc.
Effect:
Result consequence outcome repercussion. a change that something causes in something or somebody.
Result:
A thing that is caused or produced by something else.
Consequence:
A result of something that has happened especially a bad result. Outcome the result of an action or process.
