Semantic Analysis of Nigerian English Expression

SEMANTIC ANALYSIS OF NIGERIAN ENGLISH EXPRESSION

ABSTRACT

Semantics is a sub-discipline of linguistics which focuses on the study of meaning. The study was conducted to semantically analyze the Nigerian English Expression. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows to assess the level of intelligibility to typically Nigerian English expressions, carry out a semantic analysis of identified English expressions and identify the elements that constitutes uniquely Nigerian English expressions. The expressions context are made up of forty (40) established English expression interpreted based on meaning and level of intelligibility which access whether they are typically Nigerian English expressions or not. In presenting the data, table were used, this enabled the researcher to present the meaning and intelligibility assessment of the selected Nigerian English. There are four tables in all representing different sub-heading under them. On the level of intelligibility assessment, the failure has the highest figure than those who succeeded. The study is significant to learners of English in Nigeria because by presenting the same equivalents of the analyzed Nigerian expressions, it provides a variable insight for these learners to see the difference that exist between Nigeria English and the standard variety and thus will help to develop their use of English to attain the standard requirement.

CHAPTER ONE

1.1 Introduction

Semantics is a sub-discipline of linguistics which focuses on the study of meaning. Semantics tries to understand what meaning is as an element of language as well as how it is interpreted, obscured and negotiated by speakers and listeners of the language. It looks at the relationship in language and looks at how those meanings are created. Semantics is the study of meaning. It is a wide subject between the general studies of language. An understanding of semantics is essential to the study of language acquisition (how language users acquire a sense of meaning, as speakers and writers, listeners and readers) and of language change (how meaning alter over time). It is important for understanding language in social contexts as these are likely to affect meaning, and for understanding varieties of meaning and effects of style.

As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are Significance of the study, Scope of work, Research hypothesis and questions, Limitations of the Study and Definition of technical terms.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can the material for “Construction of 1000W Pure sine Wave Inverter using Microprocessor” be used as a guide for Electrical / Electronics Engineering (EE) Project?

Yes it can be used — The research work is aimed at designing and constructing a pure sine wave single phase 1000w inverter. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out to build an inverter with output power which is rated 1000w which can be powered from a 12v input source, produce an inverter with a waveform like that of the mains / utility voltage. In a sine wave, the voltage rises and falls smoothly with a smoothly changing phase angle and also changes its polarity instantly when it crosses 0 Volts, use a microcontroller as the main circuit control component hence reducing system complexity, and ensure that provision is made for backup supply to consumer equipment. Pure sine wave inverter is a …

Can the material for “A Survey of the Antibacterial Activity of Thymus Vulgaris and Myristica Fragrans on Streptococuss Pneumoniae and Pseudomonas Aeruginosa” be used as a guide for Microbiology Project?

Yes it can be used — The aqueous and ethanolic extracts of the leaves of Thymus vulgaris (thyme) and the seeds of Myristica fragrans (nutmeg) were screened for their antibacterial activity and phytochemical constituents. The standard methods used to detect the phytochemicals present in the extracts revealed the presence of tannins, flavonoids, triterpenoids and phytosterols in all the extracts while steroids and amino acids were absent. The antibacterial evaluation of the spice extracts using agar plate-well diffusion and nutrient broth dilution techniques showed that there was no significant difference in the activity of the spice extracts (p > 0.05) against the test organisms (Streptococcus pneumoniaeand Pseudomonas aeruginosa, clinical bacterial isolates). Ampiclox and chloramphenicol were used as control for the test organisms to provide approximate basis for …

Is the topic “Conflict and Conflict Management in Niger Delta Region; An Implications for Educational Productivity” recommended for Management and Education Project?

Yes it is highly recommended — This research work is based on conflict and conflict management in Niger Delta region: implications for educational productivity using practical situations to investigate if really education can be productive in regions associated with persistent crisis. Moreover, it sought to highlight some of the problems the people of Niger- Delta region have suffered as a result of the crisis, to find out why the conflicts have persisted and the ways by which these conflicts can be managed or controlled for there to be educational development in the Niger- Delta region. Data were collected from the administration of questionnaire, oral interview and group discussion used for literate adults, illiterate adults and local gatherings of Niger Delta adults respectively. Findings revealed that the crisis in …

Can the material for “Design and Implementation of a Computerized Recycling System” be used as a guide for Computer Science (CS) Project?

Yes it can be used — Computerized recycling system is an application system that provides information about recyclable materials, which are separated from the waste stream collected and managed on site. The aim of the study is to design and implement a Computerized Recycling System for Protecting the Green Environment. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows to develop an application software that will reduce environmental pollution caused by plastics materials, paper and cans and also soil pollution and provide income for the end-users of the system through the sale of materials assumed to be waste products. The motivation that led to the implementation of the proposed system is that communities endure a huge amount of waste and this has …
