Prevalence of Malaria Parasite Infections Among School Aged Children in Rural Areas

PREVALENCE OF MALARIA PARASITE INFECTIONS AMONG SCHOOL AGED CHILDREN IN RURAL AREAS

CHAPTER ONE

1.0 Introduction

Malaria is a major public health problem and cause of much suffering and premature death in the poorer areas of tropical Africa, Asia and Latin America particularly among young children (Cheesbrough, 2010). Children under five years of age are one of the most vulnerable groups affected by malaria.

There was an estimated 438,000 malaria deaths around the world in 2015 of which approximately 69% were in children under five years of age. In high transmission areas, partial immunity to the disease is acquired during childhood. In such settings, the majority of malarial disease and particularly severe disease with rapid progression to death occurs in young children without acquired immunity. Severe anaemia, hypoglycaemia and cerebral malaria are features of malaria more commonly seen in children than in adults (WHO 2016).

Malaria is an infection caused by parasites of the Plasmodium species. There are four major species of the parasite that infect man. These are P. falciparum, P. vivax, P. ovale and P. malariae. P. Knowlesi is rare.

As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are Significance of the study, Scope of work, Limitation of the study and Definition of technical terms.

Can the material for “Recalibration of 250ml Volumeter Flask” be used as a guide for Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) Project?

Yes it can be used — Recalibration of 250ml volumetric flask from time to time is very vital for determination of its accuracy and precision compared with its original manufacturers calibration. It gives a sound understanding of modern measurement methods and knowledge of equipment used. Glass is known to play an important role in the modern technology as it is used in the production of laboratory apparatus, e.g. volumetric flask, measuring cylinder etc. From this project work, it was shown in chapter three and four that recalibration is all about quantitative measurement and the process of checking a measuring system of equipment readings against a higher reference standard. The results in chapter four were checked against the tolerance of class a volumetric flask in table one. The …
