DESIGN OF A WEB BASED GEOINFORMATIC SYSTEM

CHAPTER ONE

1.1 Introduction

Geo-information system is an acronym for Geographic Information system. It is a system which contains geographic information about a particular geographic location. It is a socio-technical system for sensing, modeling, representing, visualizing, monitoring, processing and communicating geo-information in support of planning and designing. It is also the technical and scientific discipline guiding the design of a geo-informatics system. It is also a system that provides information about a particular geographical location at a particular period and it is created by manipulating data about a place in a computerize system.

The geoinformatic system includes computers and network, data use and data exchange between users within a different range of locations.

Geographic information involves map drawing about a particular location either on paper or some sort of map overlay. The input storage and display of geographical information are realized in a computer. They can be analyzed to generate new information and this is done by a software known as the GIS software.

The map work is done by a cartographer since designing of the geo-informatics system requires maps of the concerned locations.

1.2 Aims And Objectives

Objectives

  1. To maximize the efficiency of decision making and planning.
  2. To provide efficient means for data distribution and handling.
  3. Eradication of duplicated data
  4. Integration of information from many sources
  5.  Analysis of queries involving geographical reference data for generation of new information.
  6. To update data quickly and at a minimum cost.

Aims

  1. Ensuring current, accurate data by training GIS experts.
  2. Provision of standardized process for timely data delivery for the GIS environment.
  3. Increment in control of data maintenance
  4. To find how GIS can improve learning and teaching of related course in all institution of learning.

1.3 Significance Of The Study

  1. To widen human knowledge about the use of the computer system and how it relates to their everyday activities.
  2. Organization of complexities of the real world into simple representation.
  3. Facilitates understanding and relationship that exist between different geographical places.
  4. Solves problems such as planning details, application and modeling of global atmospheric circulations.
  5. Facilitates information sharing among organization in different geographical locations.

1.4 Methodology

The methodologies used in carrying out this project include mapping of case study area, the use of questionnaire, and observation of case study environment and interview of person, both students and some teaching staff of the polytechnic.

1.5 Scope And Limitation

This project concentrates on the operation of the Geo-informatic system. It provides an insight into the structure and mode of creating geoinformatic information to be stored on the computerized system. This serves as a guide to visitors to the organization as it reduces time and stress required to locate where they are going.

Since the project also deals with maps as essential part of the system, the different types of map available were also briefly described.

The use of the GIS reduces time, labour and wasted effort on the use of the manual system.

The following are the shortcomings encountered during the course of project research.

  1. Lack of quality data needed by the GIS to produce meaningful result.
  2. Restricted access to data due to their confidentiality.
  3. Cost of procuring computer and linking them at different centers to form a network is expensive.
  4. The breakdown of a centre can adversely affect the quality of data and failure at a centre will affect the reliability of entire result.
  5. Inaccurate and incomplete data

1.6 Organization Of The Report

This section gives the summary of each chapter in the project report.

Chapter one concerns itself with the introduction to the project, the aims and objectives that brought about writing of the project as well as the research methodologies involved. It also talks about a brief description of how the geoinformatic system works.

Yes it can be used — The study examines the impact of Human Resources Management Policies on workers performance, with special reference to First Bank of Nigeria plc. To achieving this, related literature was cited on Human Resource Management Policies. Human Resource Management Policies involves the system of codified decisions, established by an organization to support administrative personnel functions, performance management, employees relations and resource planning. The establishment of policies can help an organization to demonstrate both internally and externally the basic requirement to managing conflictual issues of diversity, ethics and training as well as commitment in-relation to the regulation and corporate governance of it’s employees. A sample of 80 respondents was selected from first Bank of Nigeria plc. using the simple and stratified sampling techniques. Moreso, there was a …

Can this topic “Effect of Leadership Style on Workers Performance in an Organization” be used for Business Administration and Management (BAM) Project?

Yes it can be utilized for research — Leadership style plays an important role in the motivation of workers performance. The style of leading adopted by a manager can affect the performance of the subordinates. It is important that before any leader adopts any style of leading, he should first of all understand the nature and characteristics of the subordinates since this can affect his performance. The purpose of this study is therefore, to examine the effect of leadership style on workers performance among the staff of federal polytechnic of Nasarawa. For this purpose, data was collected through questionnaire from the administrative staff of the institution. The chi square test was used to analyze the data, from the findings it was discovered that the participative style of leadership …

Yes it is highly recommended — This study is on micro-credit and Small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs): loans accessibility, and profit impact on SMEs. My main aim of carrying out this research is to investigate if micro finance institutions issue out loans to SMEs, and the impact of micro-credit on the profitability of SMEs and problems encountered by these institutions. Also other programs similar to micro finance and models of findings in other countries were pointed out. In the review of related literature area, such as their objectives, their past performances were carried out thoroughly using primary data (questionnaires).Collected data where analyzed, summarized, and interpreted accordingly with the aid of descriptive statistical techniques such as total score and simple percentage, using pie charts and tables. …

Can the material for “Design and Construction of a Metal Detector” be used as a guide for Electrical / Electronics Engineering (EE) Project?

Yes it can be used — A metal detector is a device which responds to metal that may not be readily apparent. This system detects metals of different types and also electronics gadgets such as cell phone, bombs etc. it work in such a way that when such devices are brought close to it, it detects it by giving out a beep. The research work was conducted to design and construct a metal detector. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out to construct a walk through metal detector that is capable of detecting the presence of a metallic device and walk through metal detector world also incorporate the functionality of metallic object. This will stop or reduce to the barest minimum the …

Is the topic “Design and Implementation of a Computerize Tax Collection and Management System” recommended for Computer Science (CS) Project?

Yes it is highly recommended — Tax is any form charge levied on a person or an institution by a governing body or its equivalent such that defaulted payment is punishable by law. The imposition of taxes and the institution of taxing is as old as civilization itself cutting across religion, race and continental borders. Prompt tax payment and reduced tax evasion is always a primary objective of the government in most civilizations that exist today. The issue of tax evasion has proven to be a difficult practice to curb even in nations with a proper database of its citizenry and the current mode of tax payment is redundant and hectic as ascertained through a survey of our case study. Some of the challenges governmental bodies …
