Design and Implementation of an Online Entrance Examination System

DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF AN ONLINE ENTRANCE EXAMINATION SYSTEM

ABSTRACT

An entrance examination is an examination that many educational institutions use to select students for admission. The aim of the study is to Design and Implementation of an Online Entrance Examination System using Lens Polytechnic in Kwara State Offa as a case study. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows to design and develop an application software that will create strong and secrete data base that allow for any connection in a secret way and prevention of exam malpractices by applying strict timing possibility for each question and marking of questions immediately, The student fear of been marked down is eradicated and sorting practice is reduced.

The motivation that led to the implementation of the existing system is that many applicants find it difficult to get to the examination centers due to distance and high cost of transportation. The traditional examination for recruitment is usually characterized by cheating which hampers the credibility of recruited employees.

The methodology adopted in this study is the structured system analysis and design methodology (SSADM) which is a technical approach for analyzing and designing an application or system by applying object throughout the software development process. The programming language used is HTML, CSS, JAVASCRIPT, PHP, SQL and JQUERY. The reason why web programming languages was used is because, it is platform independent and it is a web based application.

The implementation of the propsoed system will be of benefit to Educational Institution students, and lecturers. It will also be of immense benefit to researchers who intend to know more on this study and can also be used by non-researchers to build more on their research work. The expected result is an Online Examination System that will help the Institute to entrance examination of students and develop their skills.

CHAPTER ONE

1.1 Introduction

An entrance examination is an examination that many educational institutions use to select students for admission. These exams may be administered at any level of education, from primary to higher education, although they are more common at higher levels. Online entrance examination systems are very convenient and fast. The effective use of the proposed system, any Educational Institute or training centers can be use it to develop their strategy for putting the exams, and for getting better results in less time. Online entrance examination system is very useful for Educational Institute to prepare an exam, safe the time that will take to check the paper and prepare mark sheets.

As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are Significance of the study, Scope of work, Limitation of the study and Definition of technical terms.

1.2 Background of Study

In the modern world with all the complexities involve in managing a Polytechnic management requires well structured and scientifically derivable information as a basis for online entrance examination for student. The survival and continuous growth relies on the management of the automated system. In some places like Europe they make use of the online for entrance examination for student this method has proven to be very efficient and met so many standardization eliminating the manual method of pen and paper.

Lens Polytechnic is a polytechnic incorporated in Nigeria by the same management that owns and runs Lens school of management, Offa which is an innovation enterprise institution. Lens Polytechnic is an expansion from Lens School of Management and Technology (Lenspolytechnic, 2021).

The school was established on 20th April, 2012. Lens polytechnic was founded by Azeez Yisa Bukola and Abdulazeez Isahq, an educationalist and a banker of high repute, the school was accredited duly by National Board for technical education. The Proprietors have always been concerned with education and had always been disturbed with the situation of Nigeria youth who struggle to get admitted into tertiary institutions but cannot. Another set of concern are those that studied in the tertiary institutions and then find it difficult to get employed. They cannot integrate well into the industry or they cannot start up something on their own because they lack entrepreneurship skills. As part of remedy to all these situations, the Proprietors then decided to establish Lens Polytechnic.

In Polytechnics like Lens Polytechnics they have not been able to implement an online entrance examination system which can allow student login and write their exams from any location around the globe once they have purchase their entrance examination card. Though they have been several anticipated work but no reliable software to back it up. The situation has been analyzed and discovers that though much effort is required to develop and maintain this online entrance examination system.

1.3 Statement of Problem

This system allows candidates to register and take an examination in the system. The teachers of this system are allowed to login for contributing questions and viewing profile of candidates. Administrators will be able to access the system to sign up to a new entrance examination, manage questions, accounts and view profile of the candidates.

Many applicants find it difficult to get to the examination centers due to distance and high cost of transportation. Organizations are unable to reach out to a wide spectrum of applicants so as to be able to recruit the best employees. The traditional examination for recruitment is usually characterized by cheating which hampers the credibility of recruited employees.

There is need for a more effective system that is able to reach out to a wider spectrum of employees, breaking the barrier of distance and cost and thereby promoting the recruitment of well qualified staff.

1.4 Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of the study is to Design and Implementation of an Online Entrance Examination System using Lens Polytechnic in Kwara State Offa as a case study. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows to design and develop an application software that will:

  1. Create strong and secrete data base that allow for any connection in a secret way, to prevent any outside or inside attacks or question leakage.
  2. Prevention of exam malpractices by applying strict timing possibility for each question and marking of questions immediately, The student fear of been marked down is eradicated and sorting practice is reduced.
  3. Find out the challenges/disadvantages of the adoption of online examination system for student entrance into Lens Polytechnic.
  4. Identify the structure/characteristics of an online examination system for student entrance into Lens Polytechnic.

1.5 Significance of Study

The study will help the Institute to entrance examination of students and develop their skills. But the disadvantages for this system, it takes a lot of times when you prepare the exam at the first time for usage. And we are needs number of computers with the same number of students.

This system can be used to help people familiar with the equipment usage quickly which can save money and time. Now the following will analysis and contrast the existing examination systems, and shoveling out the improvement of our examination system.

This study will be of immense benefit to other researchers who intend to know more on this study and can also be used by non-researchers to build more on their research work. This study contributes to knowledge and could serve as a guide for other study.

1.6 Scope of Study

The study focuses on the Design and Implementation of an Online Entrance Examination System using Lens Polytechnic Entrance Examination in Kwara State Offa as a case study.

1.7 Limitations of the Study

During the course of this study, many things militated against its completion, some of which are:

  1. Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
  2. Establishment Policies: Establishment policies posed a serious limitation as most staffs are not ready to release information needed for this project work. There were lots of information needed from the staffs of this institution to enhance the study which took them time to release or they did not release at all for security purposes, hence the scope was reduced.
  3. Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet).

1.8 Definition of Terms

Exam: A entrance examination offered the system, have some question and multiple choices answer.

Teacher: A person contributes questions and views profile of candidates.

Candidate: A person has an account on the online entrance examination.

Administrator: A person manages the operation of the system.

Guest: A person registers an account in the online entrance examination.

Question: A problem has 4 choices and only correct answer.

Profile: All the information of candidate such name, birthday, grades of all examined entrance examinations.
